When the church was closed in the early 1980s everything from the interior was removed or had been vandalised. The medieval font was given to the Roman Catholic Shrine of Our Lady of Walsingham at Houghton St Giles in north Norfolk. After hearing of the restoration work and the Angel Award in 2015, the font was offered back to St Mary’s as it had become surplus to their requirements.
The font was removed from the shrine in late 2015, and was repaired and restored by stonemason Bruce Riley. On May 27th 2016 he installed the font back in St Mary’s Church. It is probable that the marble plinth is of the same type used in Norwich Cathedral.
Currently there are still many people alive who were christened in the font before it was removed.
